Why Should You Avoid Shein?

Shein is an online clothes boutique that everyone seems to be shopping at these days, and their popularity is undeniable. The hashtag "#shein" has billions of views on TikTok, when you have a quick search. While fast fashion retailers like as H&M and Zara offer new pieces by watching trends and going through a three-week process to release new designs, Shein is able to reduce this time to 5–7 days by using real-time data.

Shein's clothing, like that of every other quick fashion brand, is frequently of poor quality and not built to last.

After all, their attire is supposed to be fashionable. Following the trend also means that these garments aren't required to last beyond their trendy lifespan. However, because they are cheap, many of their items are constructed of synthetic fibers such as polyester and nylon. Clothing made of these materials does not deteriorate, unlike clothing made of other materials that have a short duration in our wardrobes. This means that every item of clothes we purchase from Shein will almost certainly spend far more time in a landfill than it will in our closets.

To make matters worse, Shein releases designs far more quickly than any other retailer.

This implies that, despite Shein's claims that they employ environmentally friendly production processes and sustainably produced products (including claiming that they "do their best" to source "recycled materials"), we can't verify that any of these claims are accurate.

Shein fits into the category of fast fashion firms that I already strive to avoid as a person who is fortunate enough to be able to avoid corporations that harm our environment as much as possible.

Shein, on the other hand, is a unique case of a corporation that everyone should avoid. Apart from the usual environmental consequences, Shein lacks supply chain transparency and has consistently demonstrated a lack of sensitivity and respect for independent artists, making them a firm we should all try to avoid.
